Hike south over Temple Mtn. range - look for stone furniture - and back to Windblown.

Description:

Watch fireworks from the summit of Mt. Major.

Mt. Major lies at the southern end of the Belknap Range overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee just beyond Alton Bay and has sweeping views of the mountains in all directions.

We will meet at the Mt. Major parking lot and take the Boulder Loop Trail to the summit. Fireworks start at 9:30 so plan for a late descent with flashlight or headlamp where we will return via the Brook Trail.

Bring: Layers, headlamps, flashlights, bug dope, snacks to share.

RSVP: Not necessary.
WEATHER: Hike is off in bad weather.
DOG FRIENDLY: Yes, but plan to leash on the top since there will be lots of people around.

The parking lot and trailheads for Mount Major are located in Alton, New Hampshire on Rt. 11, 4.2 miles north of Alton Bay.

Heading north, the parking lot turn-off is located shortly after a scenic vista and is on the left-hand side of the road.

Heading south, the parking lot turn-off is located a couple miles after passing the junction with Rt. 11A on the right-hand side of the road.

We will be doing a clockwise loop, up Blueberry Ledge trail across the Rollins trail and back down the Dicey's Mill trail. The ledges south of the Whiteface summit have nice views looking south.

Blueberry Ledge trail is described as scenic and challenging.

Figure on a total of 10 miles and a 3,000-foot elevation gain. Total hike time will be about 7 hours.

Bring lots of water if it's hot.

The trailhead for this hike is accessed via the Ferncroft parking area which is located in Albany, New Hampshire, indirectly off of Route 113A.

From I-93:
- From I-93, take Exit 24 and follow Rt. 3 South to Holderness.
- From Holderness, get on Rt. 113 and follow it east through its many curves and turns for about 15.5 miles until reaching the junction with Rt. 113A in North Sandwich.
- Follow Rt. 113A northeast, for 6.7 miles, to Wonalancet.
- Where Rt. 113A turns sharply right in Wonalancet village, turn left onto Ferncroft Road.
- Follow Ferncroft Road for 0.5 mile.
- Turn right onto a gravel road (FR 337) and travel for 0.1 mile.
- You will arrive at the Ferncroft parking area and kiosk.

From Rt. 16:
- From Rt. 16 in Chocurua, take Rt. 113 West and follow it for about 3 miles until reaching the junction with Rt. 113A in Tamworth.
- Follow Rt. 113A northwest, for 6.6 miles, to Wonalancet.
- Where Rt. 113A turns sharply left in Wonalancet village, turn right onto Ferncroft Road.
- Follow Ferncroft Road for 0.5 mile.
- Turn right onto a gravel road (FR 337) and travel for 0.1 mile.
- You will arrive at the Ferncroft parking area and kiosk.

Take exit 32 for Rt. 112 (also know as Kangcamagus Highway).
Go west on Rt. 112 for approximately 3 miles.
Turn left onto Rt. 118 South and follow it for 0.8 mile to arrive at Walker Brook Road on the right where there is a small parking area.
Walker Brook Road is gated about 100 feet or so from Rt. 118.
This hike starts on the road beyond the gate.

Dan Elliott and Jon Starr will lead the intermediate hike to the summit that offers a 360-degree view. Could be some blueberries along the way.

We will be doing a clockwise loop, up the Glen Boulder Trail, across the Davis Path, then down onto the Boott Spur trail. We will turn at the Boott Spur Link then take a slight detour to head into the Tuckerman Ravine bowl to enjoy the views. We will complete the loop by heading down the Tuckerman Ravine Trail.

Figure on a total of 7+ miles and a 3,300-foot elevation gain.

There will be a lot of above-treeline exposure. Bring sun screen and plenty of water.

Meet 9 a.m. at trail crossing at Route 12 in Ashburnham. From Route 12 in Fitchburg, heading north toward Ashburnham for 4.9 miles, watch for corner of Jewell Hill Road on right w/ traffic island. Park some cars on Jewell Hill Road and shuttle to trail parking lot on north side of Route 119.
